It wasn’t the first swell of the winter season to hit the South Bay but it was the first to pack the line up with local talent. The October swell brought waist to head high surf to El Porto Beach in Manhattan Beach. With the news of an el Nino winter, local surfers are sharpening their blades with these early swells. Surfers include: Dane Zaun, Tyler Hatzikian, Noah Collins, Chris Wells, Pat Murphy, Scott Johnsen and others.
Chasing Hurricane Surf
Reports of waves heading to the Southern California coast stemming from Hurricane Dolores sent us down south in hopes of scoring so long awaited surf. Watching to forecast we could tell that this swell was not going to be big enough to push the Wedge alive, so we played it safe and hit north Newport Beach instead. Unfortunately the south winds started blowing early, giving a choppy texture to the surface. The waves were still better than anything we’ve seen lately so Chris Wells, Noah Collins, Nate Yeomans, Colin Eric,Marley Puglielli, Tomas Tudela, Shaun Burrell, Trever Challenor and others went out and charged the lefts.

It’s not often that we get ideal conditions to surf in the late afternoon here in the South Bay. The wind always seems to start blowing around noon and chop the ocean out in the afternoon. Mid February brought us the Santa Ana winds that help keep the ocean calm, and the incredible sunsets helped make the sessions special. By mid afternoon on February 11th I could tell that the Santa Ana’s would cooperate so I started making calls to see who would be available for a late afternoon session. Matt Pagan and Noah Collins were in and as luck would have it, Ty Cukr and Paul Fisher were in town too. The photos below are all from that session on February 11th at El Porto in Manhattan Beach.
Bruna Schmitz, Dane Zaun, Noah Collins, Matt Pagan, Leila Hurst, Jamie Meistrell, Tommy Ostendorf and others tear apart a fun swell at El Porto in Manhattan Beach on February 11th, 2015. Warm weather, fun waves and great talent made this a fun session to shoot.

The South Bay was hit with its first real swell of the 2014-2015 season on Wednesday October 22nd. There are not sandbars yet so most of the waves were walled and closed out. Fingers crossed that enough sand moved for the next swell. Surfers include: Greg Browning, Dane Zaun,Wil Reid, Chris Wells, Noah Collins, Rich Silva, Andy Prunauer and others.
A short film by Mike Pagan. A group of South Bay surfers, including Matt Pagan, Chris Wells, Jalian Johnston, Angelo Luhrsen, Conor Beatty and Noah Collins, take a short trip north in search of waves. The central coast offers beautiful landscapes as well as good waves.
