Local surfers cleaned the cobwebs off their boards for a small south swell which worked its way into the South Bay and the El Porto area of Manhattan Beach seemed to have the best size and shape. Dane Zaun, Kyle Brown, Tommy Ostendorf, Scott Johnsen, Noah Collins, Brandon Wasserman, Tyler Hatzikian, Chris Wells and others took out some aggression on the knee to chest high waves. Here at the Civic Couch show we hope for a few more of these swells sneaking into the South Bay this summer, pickers can’t be choosers but we’d love to have a little more size next time 🙂

Yes, comparing this Live Oak Tournament is quite the exaggeration, but this 3 on 3 tournament in Manhattan Beach was incredibly entertaining. I showed up to grab a couple photos for the Easy Reader article (click here to view it) and ended up staying for well over an hour. The tournament consisted of mostly Live Oak Park regulars which led to a lot of fun banter, trash talk and a broken nose. The guys were having fun both on and off the court.
This years tournament was held in honor Joe Straight, a long Live Oak Park regular who had played on those courts for over 35 years. Joe’s brother John played the tournament and won the first annual Joe Straight MVP award.

I traveled down south to the Wedge in Newport Beach to chase a large south swell. The Wedge always provides a great show on a large south swell.
You must provide the correct slide type on the [pjc_slideshow slide_type='your_slide_type'] shortcodeAfter a surf season starting with the most postponements due to enormous waves, rain, and/or gale force onshore winds in the five year history of the club, the SBBC wrapped up the 2015 season with the last couple of contests in favorable conditions making the year truly special. On Saturday, May 2nd, the league concluded with the “King of the South Bay” surf contest at Manhattan Beach Pier. The contest was hosted by Spyder Surf.
South Bay high school surfers took over the south side of the Hermosa Beach Pier on Saturday, April 25th for the South Bay Scholastic Surfing Association Contest. The conditions were dismal at best with waves ranging from ankle to waist high and mostly closed out. The contestants did the best they could with these conditions. Civic Couch congratulates all of the contestants for charging and making it an entertaining contest.

The Hermosa Beach Surfer’s Walk of Fame just got bigger. Dennis Jarvis, Derek Levy, Chris Barela and Mike Benavidez were inducted into the Walk of Fame on Saturday, April 4th in front of a packed crowd in Hermosa Beach. All four surfers have a prominent history in the South Bays surfing community. Dennis Jarvis was introduced by Bob Hurley, Derek was introduced by his brother Mark, Barela by Kip Jerger and Benadiez by Tuzo Jerger.
The sun was out, the water was warm (for the Pacific in April), and there was a little swell in the water. As is normal to the South Bay, most of the waves were closing out but it was still fun. I caught up with Chris Wells, Steve Howe and Tracy Parkes as they took turns pulling into closeouts. The negative side was having one of my swim fins blown off by a set wave. Looks like it’s time to go shopping for a new pair.
These photos are from an early January swell which got lost in the stream of editing. Surfers included; Chace Luhrsen, Noah Collins, Scott Johnsen, Skylar, Matt Mesitrell, Greg Mcewan and Rich Silva.
