The 2017 Summer Solstice annual volleyball tournament took place on June 24th in Hermosa Beach. Congrats to the winning team consisting of Mike Dodd, Luke Walton, Laura Sikora and David Swatik.

Smackfest started in 1994 at 15th St in Manhattan Beach with only 50 participants … and has grown into the Largest Coed 4’s Tournament on the West Coast. It’s a perfect mix of volleyball, sand, sun, fun, and friends which truly embodies the So Cal lifestyle. Besides great volleyball action, they have top DJ’s, sponsor village with tons of great deals and freebies, as well as the Sharkeez/FIN fashion show. And don’t forget about the Pro Division featuring some of the best players in the world!!

Civic Couch teamed up with USA Volleyball to shoot an experimental virtual reality 360 video teaming Beach Volleyball gold medalist Phil Dalhausser, Eric Fonoimoana with upcoming players Emily Stockman and Caitlin Ledoux. This is the “behind the scenes” video from that shoot. The virtual reality version will be available soon.
On November 19th, 2017 the USA Volleyball junior beach tour hit Hermosa Beach. Divisions were broken down by age, 18 and under, 16 and under, 14 and under and finally 12 and under.

The 2016 BarryBob volleyball tournament took place on July 9th in Manhattan Beach. The tournament started in memory of Barry Walmer and Bob Cleary, who were best friends for 35 years and beach volleyball enthusiasts.
Scotty Lane, Brett Coordt, Terry Holberton and Mike Osborn were the winning team.
The Fifth Annual CBVA Beach Volleyball Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony was held on Friday November 20th at the Hermosa Beach Community Center.
Beach Volleyball Hall of Fame inductees included Ricci Luyties, Lisa Arce Zimmerman, Nancy Cohen Fredgant and Jon Hastings. Andy Fishburn, from the Hall of Fame class of 2003 was also recognized. Sean Rosenthal and Misty May Treanor handed out awards to the CBVA’s top ranked players from each rating class and the CBVA Cal Cup Youth State Champions.

The 12th Annual Greg Ack Memorial Volleyball Tournament took place Saturday, May 16th at 16th street in Hermosa Beach. Each year they honor and raise money for people who have passed away and this years honoree was Doug Schneider.
CBVA Beach Volleyball Hall Of Fame inducted three new members at the Hermosa Beach Community Center. Bob Clem, Barbra Fontana and Jose Loiola were inducted as the newest members of the Beach Volleyball Hall of Fame. The CBVA also honored volleyball legend Larry Rundle. Current AVP stars Kerri Walsh Jennings and Sean Rosenthal handed out the NCAA top player and youth awards to todays up and comers, including 2014 NCAA Beach Volleyball Champions Sara Hughes and Kirby Burnham, the CBVA’s top ranked players from each rating class and the CBVA Cal Cup Youth State Champions.
Thousands of players, fans and partiers converged for the 21 annual Smackfest beach volleyball tournament in Hermosa Beach where costumes and socializing was more important than winning and losing.
Smackfest, the largest Co-ed 4’s beach volleyball tournament in the United States, featured a “Fun” division with 36 pools of costume-themed teams. Coming out on top was Pandas in the Mist team that included some pros/NCAA standouts like Danny Newman, Erik Gomez, Clay Paulin as well as Dylan Maarek and April Bernardi.
Winning the inaugural Dave Williams Memorial Pro Division were the locals from 16th St., including reigning champs Kevin and Shelly Norman, Paul Baxter along with Barney and Jake Rosener.
Legends like Holly McPeak, Sinjin Smith, and Tim Hovland were in attendance.
“This event reminds me of when I played back in the 80’s … how volleyball was synonymous with the So Cal lifestyle,” Smith said.
