A haunting happened on the south side of the Manhattan Beach Pier in chest to high head surf on Sunday. Good corners and glassy conditions with light wind kept the spooks and goblins at bay all day at 2016’s Spyder Surf Scare and Tear Halloween surf contest.

“The Scare and Tear was started back in 2005 by Charlie Ninegar to honor Mira Costa Student Adam Frand and continues today in his honor,” said Spyder Surf’s Master of Horror Richard “The Ripper” O’Reilly. “It’s the most photogenic surf contest of the year. The Costumes were fantastic.”

Based on a sinful criteria of 50% costume and 50% wave slashing, the creepy contest brought out all the ghouls for a spook-tacular time.

The annual SKECHERS Pier to Pier Friendship Walk is an awe-inspiring event that brings together all walks of life for one common purpose; to support children with special needs and education. The walk is produced by SKECHERS USA and co-produced by The Friendship Foundation.
The walk starts at the Manhattan Beach Pier and goes to the Hermosa Pier and back.

Over 12,000 people joined together in support of the walk including celebrities Brooke Burke-Charvet, Sugar Ray Leonard, Camila Alves, Ian Ziering, Denise Austin, and Tommy Lasorda. We had more performances than ever before, with Jordyn Jones, New District, Aidan Prince, and Asia Monet Ray entertaining the crowd at the Manhattan Beach Pier.
** The walk has raised over $1,600,000 to date.

Float into the atmosphere on a weather balloon! Meadows Elementary School Science Specialist Joanne Michael and some of her students launched a weather balloon 97,405 feet into the atmosphere and attached 3 cameras to film the experience.

Thanks to a $6,000 grant from the Manhattan Beach Education Foundation, Goodyear Blimp for the use of their airfield, the help of a couple of amateur radio strangers named Tom and Jerry who stood in for Michael’s friend, and permission granted by the FAA which advised pilots that the balloon would be in the area, Meadow students learned that with preparation and the support of a community, big dreams can come true.

Mural honoring Hermosa Beach volleyball debuts on June 25th
Completed by noted local photographer Bo Bridges, the mural uses high-resolution photos on a vinyl-based material, and covers the south- and west-facing walls of the foot of the downtown parking structure. It dispenses with veneration of past stars — one image captures nothing above the knees—in favor of a multi-panel ode to the game’s athleticism. Anonymous players leap into the sky, sand exploding off the beach as though propelled by a land-mine.
