Frequent contributor to Civic Couch, writer Valerie Buck began writing for the local paper while still in high school, and transitioned that into lifestyle reporting and music critiquing. After spending the past five years working for a non-profit with young athletes, she began a writing career again during the off-season. A North Manhattan Beach resident, Valerie enjoys gardening, her dogs Gustav and Igor.

Favorite thing about living at the beach “is the beach, and the community. This is really a small town, buried inside a large city. There is just such a sense of community here.”

Trivia: Valerie won the Bronze medal in dog sled racing with her six-dog sprint team in 2000, the highlight of a four year run in the sport, which took her to Alaska, as well as races in Michigan, Colorado, Montana, British Colombia, Alberta and appearances on ESPN, Outdoor Life Network, and Animal Planet.
