North Manhattan 4th Annual Holiday Open House and Walk About showcased an evolving neighborhood giving new businesses a coming out party of their own. More than 30 different business owners in the neighborhood combine resources to organize the event, complete this year with a map and guide. The event grows each year it still manages to maintain the distinct flavor of the micro-neighborhood. “I was really happy with the turnout. It’s been growing every year” said one local business owner.
Newer faces on the Highland block included The Green Yogi, Cake, Rochford Construction and Realty, and the still under-construction Four Daughters Kitchen in the spot once occupied by Bora Bora. The Walk About is a smaller fare than the downtown’s earlier version but gaining in popularity and scope. Boutiques such as Encore Bridal (a new and consignment bridal boutique) added flair, with a DJ and Upper Manhattan ran repeat performances of its Holiday Burlesque show to packed crowds. Neighborhood fixture Panchos provided the Toy Drop Spot for local charity Walk With Sally, and Level 10 Fitness added a family flair with a balloon artist. Panchos parking deck also provided the stage area for “The Flying Utensils” band cranking the tunes for three hours. Many businesses also capitalized on the event offering specials, trunk shows, tours and product demonstrations to begin their holiday shopping season.
