Saturday was to be the Poop Deck’s 57th anniversary party, a Hermosa Beach tradition celebrated with Bud beers and a new patio mural by the Budweiser distributor’s artist, caricaturing The Strand bar’s regulars and staff. But three days before the party, instead of anniversary posters, Poop Deck owner Dorothy Zagozda was stapling signs to the front door that read, “Last Call, Saturday. April, 20. 9 a.m. to close.” The Poop Deck lost its lease last month to the owners of Uncorked, a wine tasting room up the street, on Pier Avenue. The new owners will offer local craft beers and fine wines, and promise to preserve the neighborhood bar spirit. They are shortening the name to The Deck.

Coupled with the rock star power of Gavin Rossdale, delicious samplings of some of LAs best restaurants and lounges and showcasing the hottest BMW models, Walk With Sallys annual White Light White Night fundraiser sponsored and hosted by South Bay BMW rocked the South Bay Saturday, July 11, 2009. The charity is proud to announce that the evening raised in excess of $100,000, which will be utilized to expand its mentorship program for children whose parents or siblings are fighting or have died from cancer.

With the goal of decreasing childhood obesity, Beach Cities Health District launched its “Walking School Bus” (WSB) program on Oct. 9 in elementary schools throughout Redondo, Hermosa and Manhattan Beach. More than 700 elementary-aged children from 14 area schools are expected to participate in the walk-to-school initiative, which is launching for the third straight year on International Walk to School Day.
