Rainy Swell brings fun waves to the South Bay
Another fun swell hits the South Bay but brings rain with it. This swell packed a wedgy, board snapping punch to most South Bay beaches. The direction of this swell was a bit weird, closing out most of the popular breaks and bringing waves where they rarely break. The weather brought fog and rain making it tricky to shoot.
It’s been a while since the South Bay has received a solid swell. Normally the winter season provides the South Bay with plenty of big surf, but this winter has been off to a slow start until this most recent swell.
These clips were shot on January 24, 2017 in Redondo Beach. Surfers include: Jalian Johnson, Andre Anorga, Chris Brown, Kris Hall, Chris Frohoff, Noah Collins and others.
Civic Couch teamed up with USA Volleyball to shoot an experimental virtual reality 360 video teaming Beach Volleyball gold medalist Phil Dalhausser, Eric Fonoimoana with upcoming players Emily Stockman and Caitlin Ledoux. This is the “behind the scenes” video from that shoot. The virtual reality version will be available soon.
“Team Chris”, consisting of Chris Frohoff, Chris Brown and Chris Wells, along with their non-Chris friends attacked a fun windswell in Hermosa Beach on November 28th.
This video was produced by Civic Couch and presented by our sponsor Manhattan Beach Toyota.
On November 19th, 2017 the USA Volleyball junior beach tour hit Hermosa Beach. Divisions were broken down by age, 18 and under, 16 and under, 14 and under and finally 12 and under.
The USA Volleyball junior beach tour travels across the county. Visit their WEBSITE for more information.

Our second swell of the winter season hit with a little more shape. The first swell which came early November was mainly all closed out waves. This one had more corners although it was far from “great”.
Surfers include: Matt Pagan, Noah Collins, Cody Purcell and others.
A haunting happened on the south side of the Manhattan Beach Pier in chest to high head surf on Sunday. Good corners and glassy conditions with light wind kept the spooks and goblins at bay all day at 2016’s Spyder Surf Scare and Tear Halloween surf contest.
“The Scare and Tear was started back in 2005 by Charlie Ninegar to honor Mira Costa Student Adam Frand and continues today in his honor,” said Spyder Surf’s Master of Horror Richard “The Ripper” O’Reilly. “It’s the most photogenic surf contest of the year. The Costumes were fantastic.”
Based on a sinful criteria of 50% costume and 50% wave slashing, the creepy contest brought out all the ghouls for a spook-tacular time.

A nice but short swell hit the South Bay this week bringing chest to overhead waves to our beaches giving our local surfers something to get excited about. Surfers include: Noah Collins, Chris Wells, Alex Gray, Trevor LaShure, Angelo Luhrsen, Andy Prunauer and others.
El Porto in Manhattan Beach saw some surprisingly fun surf on September 23rd. Tyler Hatzikian, Scott Johnsen, Mike Siorida, Wagner De Abreu and others were there taking advantage of the fun, knee to head high swell.
